1. Who we are

TeacherAI (teacherai.ca) is an AI-assisted lesson planning, assessment, and reporting tool built for Ontario Kโ€“8 teachers, including those with split-grade classrooms. TeacherAI is built and operated by Ontario teachers and is not affiliated with any school board.

This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use TeacherAI.

2. What we collect

We do not collect: student birthdates, OSAP numbers, home addresses, psychological assessments, full IEP documents, or any sensitive personal information beyond what is listed above.

3. Student data

โš ๏ธ
MFIPPA notice: Student data collected through TeacherAI may be subject to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) in Ontario. We recommend using first names only, initials, or pseudonyms whenever possible. Do not upload full IEP documents โ€” paraphrase accommodations in your own professional notes.

TeacherAI collects minimal student information โ€” first names, grade level, and teacher-written accommodation notes. This is limited to what a teacher would write in a lesson plan or class list.

What we do not collect:

Students access worksheets through a shared link โ€” they type their first name to identify themselves. No student account is created.

4. How AI is used

TeacherAI uses the Anthropic Claude API to generate lesson plans, worksheets, rubrics, and report card comments. When content is generated:

What IS sent to Anthropic: topic, grade level, subject, duration, anonymized learning needs, and class context notes. Anthropic's API does not use API data to train models by default. For details, see Anthropic's Privacy Policy.

5. Data storage & residency

All TeacherAI data is stored in Canada on AWS infrastructure in Montreal, Quebec (ca-central-1 region), accessed through Supabase, our database and authentication provider.

This means your data โ€” including student names, assessment records, lesson content, and worksheet submissions โ€” never leaves Canada at rest. Canadian data residency supports compliance with PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, federal) and MFIPPA (Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Ontario) requirements for Ontario educators.

Data in transit is encrypted via HTTPS/TLS. Data at rest is encrypted by Supabase's storage layer. Database access is restricted by row-level security policies that scope every record to the teacher who created it.

Security incident reporting: If we discover a privacy breach affecting your data, we will notify affected users within 72 hours of discovery and report to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada when required under PIPEDA's Mandatory Breach of Security Safeguards regulations.

We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or any other third parties. We do not use your data for marketing.

Where third parties process data outside Canada (Anthropic, Fal.ai), we limit what is sent to anonymized content only and rely on contractual data-handling commitments from those providers. Student names, marks, and worksheet submissions never leave Canada.

7. Retention & deletion

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. Specifically:

You can delete individual students, lessons, and assessment sessions directly from the app. You can also request full account deletion from the in-app account menu, which removes all associated data within 30 days.

Worksheet submissions older than one school year may be automatically purged at the start of the next school year. We recommend exporting any submissions you wish to retain long-term.

8. Your rights

Under PIPEDA (the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act) and applicable Ontario privacy law, you have the right to:

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email address below. We will acknowledge your request within 5 business days and respond fully within 30 days.

9. MFIPPA & Ontario schools

TeacherAI is designed with Ontario's privacy landscape in mind, including the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), which governs student data in Ontario school boards.

Recommendations for Ontario teachers:

TeacherAI is not currently approved by any specific Ontario school board. Individual teachers use this tool under their own professional judgment. We are actively working toward formal board approval and Privacy Impact Assessment processes โ€” contact us if your board would like to evaluate TeacherAI.
